Octava

FAQs

Q:
Won’t using Octava be a distraction during a concert?
A:
We have developed a special dark screen technology that prevents glare during performances, and “glance optimized” notes that are designed to help audiences engage rather than distract. We started Octava because we were interested in having a positive impact on audience engagement, and we’ve been true to that core mission throughout every step of development.
Q:
How do you know your audience isn’t distracted?
A:
We have been testing with audiences since 2011, gathering qualitative data that guides our development. User insight from this process continues to inform our approach, making the Octava experience one that increasingly focuses users on the performance. Now, most define their Octava experience “creative,” “fun,” and “engaging.”
Q:
How do you know people aren’t checking Facebook or e-mail rather than listening?
A:
Wi-Fi systems can be configured to limit to certain IP addresses, which may be optimal. But even without such a system, the reason people want to go online at a concert is because they become disinterested in the experience. Octava is designed to combat that instinct by helping audiences re-engage.
Q:
Aren’t you destroying the sanctity of the classical concert experience?
A:
Recorded music did not replace live music and television did not close down every movie house in America. Now and forever it will be the emotion of the music, the beauty of the concert hall and the talents of the musicians that will keep audiences coming back. Octava can play a part in bringing classical concert performances alive to broader audiences and give people new and innovative ways to enjoy, learn about and share the classic concert experience.
Q:
I already have program notes. Why do I need Octava?
A:
Program notes provide great information in a form that makes for great leisure reading before or after the concert. But Octava notes are designed to be read quickly during the performance, and are provided at the exact moment audiences need them most.
Q:
Can I use the program notes I already have in Octava?
A:
Octava notes can be designed in any way you like. Orchestras have used them to provide comments from the musicians themselves, along with visual media created by their own marketing department. Octava’s flexible platform can be used in whatever way works best for your organization.
Q:
We perform in a venue that doesn’t have Wi-Fi. Will Octava work there?
A:
The Octava system supports cellular communication for mobile devices, so Wi-Fi is not necessary to run Octava enabled performances.
Q:
Our organization is unsure of Wi-Fi cellular/coverage in our performance venue. How do we determine if Octava is right for us?
A:
We have worked with organizations of all sizes, and can provide some assistance in evaluating your performance venue.
Q:
On what platforms is Octava available?
A:
Currently, Octava is available for both Android and iOS devices through both the Google Play Store, and App Store.
